Workers Compensation Tax
> Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
Hmm.
Yah, but ( in reverse order) a hundred years ago :
There was no Workers Compensation (nor health insurcance). If
you got hurt on the job you were just SOL. And people got hurt, a lot.
Underground aquifiers weren't under nearly the stress they are
now. The Ogallala aquifier (which feeds all the irrigation in western
Kanses, Nebrasks etc.) is being pumped dry as you read this. When it's
dry, wheat hence bread will get more expensive. Not to mention corn.
A hundred years ago recreational watercraft were almost
exclusively the yachts of the wealthy.
Motor vehicles were likewise toys of the wealthy, not necessary
trans****tation taxing the ability of government to provide roads and
other services for same.
A few telephone exchanges existed in major cities. Again, toys of
the wealthy.
There was no unemployment compensation. (thus if you got hurt, not
only did you have to mend yourself on your own dime -- there was
unemployment check to help out either).
There were no paved highways, no truck and no truckers.
There was no social security.
There was no medical care for retirees (medicare) (if you lived
long enough to retire, most didn't)
There was no market for and therefore no widespread use of
gasoline, because there were no roads and cars to speak of, hence no
infrastructure that needed any money to maintain.
There were no building codes. This led to more than a few
tradgedies.
Just to keep things in perspective.
elf (wouldn't want to live a hundred years ago, even as a Rockefeller
or a Vanderbilt)
