*****SPOILER ALERT********
If you havent read Triumph of the Sun yet, please stop now for this
post contain major SPOILERS!!!
I must say, Wilbur at his finest! Triumph of the Sun was an awesome
read right from page 1. However, there was one thing that I didnt
really get, or should I rather say irritated me a bit.
Throughout the first half of the book it became clear that Ryder was
attracted to Rebecca Benbrook and quite fond of the rest of the
Benbrook family. His arrangement with Gordon was in fact that when
Khartoum would be evacuated he would take the Benbrook family with him.
When the Dervish eventually attack Khartoum, Ryder couldnt give a damn
about the others and just got into his little boat and sailed away?
What the hell? Did I miss something. Literally hours before the attack
he again asked Rebecca her hand in marriage. When she assured him that
when "this dreadful business is over, I feel sure we will have
something of value to share" Then Ryder replied "Then I shall live in
hope" Also, only hours before he saved little Amber from Cholera, and
thus she was still fragile when the Dervish stormed the city.
Why in the world did he abandon them like a "coward"? and sailed away.
Only Saffron made it to safely him, only just!
Maybe I took it way too seriously, but this scene kept on bugging me
and I was just wondering if someone felt the same.
All in all, I must stress that Triumph was still a brillaint read;)
