About the Eye of Cat audiobooks (mystery solved; phantom warning)

by "ckovacs" <ckovacs@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 31, 2005 at 04:16 PM

I've figured something out about the Eye of Cat audiobooks which I
thought I'd share in case any other Zelazny collectors are out there
searching for them.

A few web sites (Zelazny collector sites; Amazon; etc) indicate that
there were 2 versions, an abridged version from Lotus Press in 1990
(ISBN 0-929402-03-0) and an unabridged version from Sunset Productions
in 1992 (ISBN 1-56431-024-8). Some sites quote the same ISBN numbers
but state other publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Dummy Book Co,
etc. Some sites state that both versions were abridged versions.

The above is mostly incorrect. There were 3 different packages, 1
abridged version, and no unabridged version.

One package comes from Lotus Press, ISBN 0-929402-03-0, in a soft paper
case featuring artwork by Mina Yama****a (an large Indian in blue and
red ink, with a shadow of Cat behind). This is abridged on three
cassettes lasting approximately 290 minutes.

A second package comes from Lotus Press, ISBN 0-929402-03-0 in a hard
plastic case with hard paper boards featuring artwork by Sid Hausman in
orange (Indian running to left, away from Cat's head). This is
abridged on three cassettes lasting approximately 290 minutes. IT IS
THE SAME ISBN NUMBER AS THE FIRST BUT ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PACKAGING AND
ARTWORK.

A third package comes from Sunset Productions, ISBN 1-56431-024-8, in a
hard plastic case with hard paper boards featuring artwork by Sid
Hausman in orange (Indian running to left, away from Cat's head). This
is abridged on three cassettes lasting approximately 290 minutes. NOTE
- STICKERS STATING THE NEW ISBN NUMBER AND THE NAME SUNSET PRODUCTIONS
WERE PLACED OVER THE LOTUS INFO ON THE BACK; A SUNSET CATALOGUE
STATEMENT WAS PLACED INSIDE THE BOARDS ON A STICKER; IT STILL STATES
LOTUS PRESS ON THE SPINE; ESSENTIALLY THE LOTUS CASE WAS SLIGHTLY
REDONE BY THE ADDITION OF STICKERS TO MAKE IT A SUNSET PRODUCTIONS
CASE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE SECOND AND THIRD VERSIONS ARE THE SAME
EXCEPT FOR SOME STICKERS AND DIFFERENT ISBNS.

I think that the second package came first in 1990, followed by third
package in 1992, and then what I've listed as the first package came
last.  That first package is still in print from Lotus Press directly;
search under "Native American" to find it (http://www.lotuspress.com).

It is very clear that there wasn't an unabridged version, there was
simply a redistribution of the abridged version by Sunset Productions
using a new ISBN number. And then Lotus reverted to the original ISBN
number with another repackaging.

It should be obvious that I figured this out the hard way...

Plus, I also learned that Sid Hausman (artist) and Gerald Hausman
(writer) are bothers, both with Zelazny connections...

Caveat emptor...

Chris
