Plenty of cookbooks cover recipes for the well-known blackberry,
raspberry, and
blueberry – but how many discuss and provide recipes for the Jostaberry,
Salmonberry, or Buffaloberry? Janie Hibler's The Berry Bible does,
covering all
these and more with almost two hundred recipes for using both cultivated
and
wild berries, fresh or frozen. The Berry Bible comes from a contributing

Robert Rose/Firefly Books, dist.
155 East 34th St. #5B, NY, NY 10016
www.firefly.com www.amazon.com
Five new cookbooks from Robert Rose in Canada provide excellent basic
'bibles'
of information particularly useful for cooks new to each topic. New owners
of
bread machines, for example, get a inspiriational lift from Donna Washburn
and
Heather Butt's 250 Best American Bread Machine Baking Recipes (0778800997,
$19.95), a survey of bread machine innovations supplementing many tips
with
actual recipes for both 1.5-lb and 2-lb bread machines. Owner****p of such
a
machine is the only prerequisite here: recipes have all been tested with
American flours and provide a wide range of machine dishes – plus other
foods
which can be made using the bread machine. Cookie fans won't want to miss
Esther Brody's 500 Best Cookies, Bars & Squares (0778801039, $19.95),
packing
in ****table comfort food recipes for a wide range of both traditional and
new
cookies. No-bake recipes appear alongside classics and all hold the
special
appeal of being very easy to rush together and bake. 125 Best Pressure
Cooker
Recipes by Chinda Chavich (0778801063, $18.95 does require a pressure
cooker at
hand, but provides an easy set of guidelines to using the pressure cooker
to
develop a range of recipes. Especially im****tant here is a section on how
to
adapt your own recipes to the pressure cooker's specifications –- but
there
are so many recipes here that users will want to begin with this 'bible'
at
hand. Judith Finlayson's 125 Best Vegetarian Slow Cooker Recipes
(0778801-047,
$17.95) addresses a problem apparent with the majority of competing slow
cooker
cookbooks: a focus on meat-based dishes. While 'filler' dishes such as
desserts
are included to help the slow cooker chef produce a complete meal, the
focus is
on the mainstays of a vegetarian's table: the soups, stews, and main
courses a
slow cooker lends to. Many vegan-friendly dishes are included, also
setting
this apart from competing vegetarian cookbooks. Julie Hasson's 125 Best
Chocolate Recipes (0778801012, $18.95) packs in chocolate recipes ranging
from
muffins and cakes to bars, puddings ad more. Especially notable is the
fact
that Hasson has gathered or created many of these recipes from her travels
and
thus packs 125 Best Chocolate Recipes with dishes not to be found in most
of
the competition.

which
would be easy to reproduce at home, as for the cakes themselves. And it
may
seem too easy to deserve its own book, but the lowly grilled cheese
sandwich
achieves a stature deserving of such with Marlena Spieler's Grilled Cheese
(0811841294, $16.95). Fifty sandwich recipes designed to melt in your
mouth use
a facing full-page color photo of the completed creation to compliment the

Plenty of college-level texts cover Indian history and culture with
mention of
food – but few focus exclusively on the connections between food and
culture
as does Colleen Taylor Sen's Food And Culture In India. Using a historical
approach, Indian culinary expert Sen provides an analysis of how cultures
and
cuisines have mixed within India from prehistoric to modern times. There
are
recipes peppered throughout, but the heart of Food And Culture In India
lies in
its cultural approach and college-level collections will consider it a
value
addition to any in-depth section on India.
