A few years ago I served as secretary pro tem****e to organize the Moscow
Russian Kurt Vonnegut fan club. I had contacts in the American and the
British embassies post a notice on their bulletin board. On the Moscow
end the president of the club did an interview with the the Moscow Times
about the purpose of the club. The interviewer presented the interview
in an unfriendly light, and ****trayed as howling lunatics the young
couple who were organizing the club, a club which is at this time, BTW,
defunct.
Defunct.
More recently I wrote to Wyaduck to try to get a contact number to obtain
the Thai rights to BOC. I think his secretary forwarded the request to
an atty, but that was as far as it went. ("Some howling lunatic wants the
Thai rights to BOC." ) I still hope to have it translated at some
point, assuming it has not already been done.
Some years earlier we also lost Anthony Burgess... Burgess was a visiting
professor of creative writing at CUNY, holding the position before
turning it over to Kurt, IIRC. When Burgess was there it was an open
campus with vouchers for homeless people and so on. Once Burgess
approached a couple of students who were not exhibiting the proper
demeanor of the aspiring writer, grabbed them by the collars, and hauled
them out the door.
Kurt doubtless encountered similar situations, and I always like KV's
quote of the academically or letters-challenged "Wuffo? Wuffo I want to
read no 'Tale of Two Cities'? Wuffo?"
