I saw this in a UK bookstore this afternoon and I've got to say I was
less than impressed by lacklustre cover and synopsis, or at least by the
way the latter was written.
Perhaps I'm being unfair because I rate pure fantasy less than I do SF
but to me the synopsis came across as typical sub-LOTR fantasy cliché.
Even the place and character names sounded Tolkienesque (perhaps sadly
inevitable in the genre, especially in the current climate).
From the presentation I wouldn't have given the book a second thought
had I not already been a big fan of May's work.
I will no doubt read it eventually, just as I have her other works, but
I can't see it capturing new readers by any method other than word of
mouth from May fans. There's certainly nothing in the presentation, at
least for the UK hardcover, to make it stand out among the plethora of
alternative fantasy works on the shelves.
