Each part of our body is vital in our overall well-being. Whether you believe it or not, these body parts are interconnected with each other in one way or another. When one part starts to deteriorate, some other parts will be harshly affected as well. That is why we need to make sure that we take good care of all our body parts so that any forms of sickness will not be bugging us in the near future. In this article, we will put focus on the correlation between taking care of your gums and your kidney.
The kidney is an essential body part in terms of excreting unwanted waster from our body. This part is located at the back of our abdomen. Its primary task is to filter blood so as to leave excess waste behind and release it as urine. Without our kidneys, the things inside our body will not be filtered. We cannot always say that everything inside our body is good. There are components that could cause damage and bad things to our body. The kidney does that job for us. However, without any proper maintenance and care, our kidneys might shut down – which is a very dangerous thing. One of the factors that could affect the performance of the kidneys would be periodontal disease.
A periodontal disease can be easily described as a gum disease. This is caused by the infestation of bacteria. Our mouth actually is full of different kinds of bacteria, but they are classified as either good or bad bacteria. In the case of periodontal disease, it is the bad bacteria that cause the trouble. Specifically, these bad bacteria are known as plaque. Plaque is actually developed when some food particles are left in our oral cavity and they are left there until they spoil down. When left for a very long time, plaque produces tartar. These two things can cause a lot of damage to your oral cavity once they spread and reproduce to bigger numbers.
As mentioned earlier, periodontal disease can be very related to some diseases of the kidney. Specifically, a recent study that was published on the Lancet Oncology journal has stipulated that periodontal disease has the capability to increase the risk of kidney cancer by almost fifty percent. With this, people are not only asked to take care of their kidney but their gums to begin with since these small parts in our mouth can bring a lot of dangerous health-related problems.
With that being said, all that needs to be settled would be to overcome periodontal disease before it spreads and affects other bodily processes. How can this be done? The most effective way of beating periodontal disease is by maintaining proper oral hygiene. Bad bacteria will be greatly minimized if the oral cavity is kept clean all the time. It is also important to regularly visit your dentist to check for any possible complications in your oral cavity.
