Gum recession is a common dental problem, usually normal with age. Most people do not even realize that they have one because it occurs gradually. Gum recession happens when the margin of the tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away in a direction toward the end of the root, exposing more of the tooth. It can also be a result of a chronic inflammation associated with gum disease. This is fairly common in young adults who have aggressive tooth brushing habits. When the gum recedes, it can lead to thermal sensitivity to the tooth and may be unsightly. Studies have shown that when the amount of attached gum tissue diminishes below one millimeter, teeth are more vulnerable to developing further recession.
At early signs of receding gums, it is best to ask for your dentist’s advice. They can give you tips on what suitable toothbrushes can be used that will not give further problems to your sensitive teeth. Flossing and rinsing of mouthwashes can also be a great help to get rid of plaque. A neutral fluoride mouthwash can be used regularly to help to strengthen the exposed root surface, limiting sensitivity and preventing root decay. Ask your dentist what is the most suitable type for you.
Toothpaste can also be a big factor for receding gums. There are different kinds of toothpaste available in the pharmacy. Your dentist can give a specific brand that is best for sensitivity problems. The toothpastes designed for sensitivity problems may reach between 10-14 days to take full effect and are best used all the time for prevention. A fluoride-containing paste or gel is probably the best to help keep teeth clean while reducing sensitivity
One can also take additional measures to help prevent receding gums from happening. Chewing sugarless gum can help to increase the flow of protective saliva to the teeth and gums. This helps neutralize acid which can damage teeth and also helps to prevent the growth of plaque. Eating the proper foods can also help prevent this condition. Sugary, starchy, and acidic foods have been proven to increase the likelihood of gum disease that causes gum recession. If you find yourself eating such foods, be sure to brush and floss immediately afterwards to prevent plaque from building up and causing problems with your gums.
